In recent years the use of The Petition to try and effect Government Policy has become a much over used tool.
Whist the Government promises to debate a Petition in Parliament if it reaches a certain threshold - in practice this debate is not a full debate in the House of Commons, but rather a much smaller gathering in a Committee Room.
Your MP will be informed of the results of that debate, mostly a negative result and in most cases that will be the end of the matter.
Additionally they are difficult to organise and collate and clearly not as effective as they need to be.
